Democratic gubernatorial candidate Artur Davis joined Republican rivals Bradley Byrne and Kay Ivey on TV airwaves today with his first advertisement.
The piece, titled "Alabama First," seems to be the campaign's attempt to merge the congressman's Washington record with Alabamians' concern with the state's flagging economy.
I have only one quibble with it: According to a line in the script, Davis is running for governor "because our businesses and families are facing an economic crisis."
I'm pretty sure Davis would say that there are other reasons he's running. While the economy and state unemployment are the primary issues in this campaign, framing his campaign's purpose solely on them sells his interest and expertise in other important issues short.
I would have written the line, "Our businesses and families are facing an economic crisis, and that's one reason Artur Davis is running for governor." See the difference? It invites interest into the other reasons he's running -- all of which are good ones.
What do you think? Is this a good start for the Davis campaign? What would you do differently?
