“Guys and Dolls” is love stories wrapped around gangsters and set in New York.
At least that’s the way Revel Gholston, the director of the Theatre Department at Opelika High School, describes his newest production, “Guys and Dolls.”
It’s an “old-school musical style,” he said.
And it’s one of his favorites.
He calls the show a tribute to New York and to Broadway.
Another reason he chose the show is that it allows a lot of students to be involved.
“(The show) is the biggest as for amount of kids involved in a long time,” he said.
About 40 students are performing on stage.
The production will feature Emmie Smith as Sarah Brown, William Palmer as Sky Masterson, Madeline Hamlet as Adelaide and Peyton Alsobrook as Nathan Detroit.
“I like it, because you get to get outside of yourself,” said Alsobrook. “(You get to) go back in time and play somebody from the past.”
“I’m excited because I think the community will like it,” said Smith. “This (show) has less of a message, it’s more entertaining.”
There’s a lot of involvement with the kids and different school departments, Gholston said.
The art department and wood shop class have both helped with the musical.
Woodshop built pieces for the set and the art department helped paint, he said.
Opelika High School produces a musical every year.
This year’s production will be presented today, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
All shows begin at 7 p.m. except Sunday’s which will begin at 3 p.m.
Adult tickets for the show are $10. Student tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the door.
