AREA ROUNDUP: Opelika's girls beat Newnan in 1st round of AHS holiday tourney
Bethany Howard scored 11 points to pace Opelika in a 53-31 win over Newnan (Ga.) in the first round of the Auburn High Lady Tigers Holiday Classic on Tuesday afternoon at the AHS Fieldhouse.

A total of 24 area football players earned All-State honors handed down by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, including nine first teamers.

Auburn High’s boys took fourth place and the girls took fifth at the state meet at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center at Auburn University on Saturday.

The Tigers’ boys team (4-1) scored a 49-44 win over the Bulldogs on Tuesday night, behind 18 points from Cole Stockton and 11 from Daijon Macklien.

REELTOWN -- The Reeltown Rebels (8-3) struggled to find yards in the first half but eventually overwhelmed the Lexington Golden Bears in the second half with an opportunistic passing game and a dominating defense in the first round of the 2A playoffs.
