The Auburn University Board of Trustees spent most of Thursday discussing the future of the Auburn University system.
Last fall, when university officials started asking the people on campus, in the community and around the state what direction they wanted Auburn to head, the idea was that by the April board meetings, President Dr. Jay Gogue would have 25 to 30 items to discuss with trustees as a final draft of a new strategic plan. However, Board President Pro Tempore Paul Spina said the board didn’t want to see a revised list. They wanted to muscle through all 62 ideas instead.
“This is an opportunity to have dialogue with the president on a most important item, the strategic plan,” Spina said. “This is the future of our
university.”
Board members did not debate every item individually, but focused on broad topics like instruction and research and some specific topics like admission standards, national rankings and the honors college.
“Ninety percent of the discussion was about research and academics,” Gogue said. “I think that’s a good sign.”
Gogue is now charged with taking the board’s input and using it to prioritize the items with timelines and responsibilities. He will then present a final draft to the trustees at its next meetings in June. He doesn’t think the revised plan will contain all 62 items because some ideas may be merged.
“I haven’t considered this draft any more than a draft,” he said.
If the board is comfortable with the next version, Gogue said it will be implemented and in place to be reviewed
annually.
“Next year at this time, we are going to want you to have a similar discussion,” he told board members.
