The national spotlight may be on Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul in coming weeks as Democratic and Republican parties officially make their nominations for president, but East Alabama can stick its chest out just a little bit knowing it had a hand in the process.
Joe Turnham and Mike Hubbard, both of Auburn and both chairmen of the Alabama Democratic and Republican parties, respectively, will be on hand when Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain give their acceptance speeches for the presidency.
These guys aren’t going merely as fans of their respective parties. They are serving as representatives of the state of Alabama. They are serving as representatives of their respective parties. And they are serving as your representatives, citizens of East Alabama, which is quickly rising as a major player in state politics. For the next few weeks, it’s going to be a player on the national scene, too.
Regardless of your party of choice, we should all take pride in their important positions and attendance at these events that could very well help shape the future of this nation.
We know both delegates, as state party chairmen, will be very busy during the conventions, but we are happy to know they look forward to reporting back to the people each day’s events. Turnham and Hubbard have committed to writing a daily blog for this newspaper’s Web site (www.oanow.com).
Their thoughts and observations will also be printed on the pages of this newspaper for those who do not have access to a computer.
