ANDALUSIA — A powerful member of the Alabama Legislature, Senate Rules Committee Chairman Lowell Barron of Fyffe, has a court date Sept. 16 in south Alabama involving his driving.

Barron was stopped by officers in Covington County for driving at excessive speeds on July 27. Court officials say he received tickets for reckless driving and running a stop sign.

Barron says he was driving fast because he trying to get away from a motorcycle that had been tailing his car for more than 30 miles. Barron says he was concerned for his safety.

Andalusia Police Chief Wilbur Williams says Barron was driving close to 100 mph, and there are motorists who witnessed his driving.

Court officials say Barron is due to appear at 9 a.m. Sept. 16 before Covington County District Judge Frank McGuire.
