Students begin to move into dorms this week

The Auburn University Office of Housing and Resident Life is in “full mode” right now, according to Rob McKinnell, manager of housing administration operations.

Early move-ins are this week. On Aug. 7, returning sorority members will move into sorority halls in the dorms.

“They can concentrate on Rush ... Some of the band (freshman members) will be checking in on the eighth,” he said. “On the ninth is when we have our true early check in.”

Approximately 75 percent of students, most of them freshmen living in the dorms, will check in on Aug. 9.

Early check-in gives freshmen the chance to get settled before classes, he said.

There is a $90 flat fee for anyone who moves in early.

McKinnell offered some advice to freshman including to remember to get everything need for their dorm before moving-in.

“The Lowes, Targets and Wal-Marts of the world are unbelievable,” he said referring to how crowded the stores are.

He also recommended reading the Guide to Resident Life.

“They really need to utilize that piece of material,” he said.

The guide includes information like how to get new keys and who to contact for maintenance help.

There are 2,800 beds total, McKinnell said.

Approximately 800 students are returning residents.

Most upperclassmen will check-in on the regular move in date — Aug. 16. “Returns do not tend to come back as early,” he said. They try to hold onto the last few days of summer.

There is also an added bonus for dorm students.

“Our buildings will be fully wireless,” McKinnell said. “That’s something that’s exciting.”
