This has been a critical week of recruiting for Auburn University.
And not just for the school’s football program.
This weekend, Auburn University will come alive with music as nearly 300 of the state’s best and brightest band students converge on the campus for the Honor Band Festival.
This year’s festival will include clinics by the university instrumental faculty, a showcase of chamber ensembles and a concert performance by the AU Symphonic Band.
This weekend’s three-day festival will conclude Sunday with a concert, which is free to the public, according to Rick Good, Auburn University Director of Bands.
And you can bet Good will be keeping an eye out for future AU band members.
“This is a huge recruiting week for our program,” Good said.
This is the 17th year that the Honor Band Festival has been held and will include high school band members from Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee.
“This festival is an opportunity to get some of the best band students in the country on our campus and give them and introduction of sorts to what being a part of a college band program is really like,” Good said.
While getting instruction from conductors is important in the development of the next generation of college band members, it’s simply being able to talk and spend time with current AU band members that Good says is the best recruiting tool.
“If these high school students see AU students already in the program happy and having a great experience, it speaks volumes into helping them make their decision on attending AU in the future,” Good said.
While a a few of the high school students attending the Honor Band Festival are sophomores, most are juniors and seniors.
