Rental property destroyed by fire
Fire destroyed a mobile home belonging to Lee County Commissioner Mathan Holt Monday night, according to Auburn police reports.
Holt said Tuesday the mobile home on Lee Road 676 was one of his rental properties.
“I was at a commission meeting last night,” Holt said. “Right when we were getting through with the commission meeting, I got a phone call that said I had a unit on fire.”
Holt drove to the property to find firefighters putting out the blaze.
“It had been burned,” Holt said. “It was totally unusable, unliveable after that.”
Holt said he contacted the local chapter of the Red Cross, who found a place for the mobile home’s residents to stay Monday night.
No injuries were reported.
The fire reignited late Tuesday morning.
Southwest Volunteer Fire Department responded both times. Lt. Daniel Haden was among them.
“The first time, the structure was pretty intact,” Haden said. “It was burning on both ends, but it wasn’t burning in middle. We were able save the majority of structure. Then this morning, when started back up, everything was a total loss.”
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
Chevron robbed; no injuries reported
A man robbed University Chevron in the 100 block of North College Street early Tuesday morning, according to a statement released by Auburn police.
At approximately 5:30 a.m., police responded to a robbery at the gas station. A clerk said a black male, approximately 5-feet, 8-inches tall and 140 pounds, entered the store and demanded money, according to the statement. The man was wearing a tan jacket, tan pants and white tennis shoes.
The suspect forced a clerk behind the counter and robbed the business of an undetermined amount of money, according to the statement.
“The clerk believed the man to be armed,” Auburn police Capt. Tom Stofer said.
Details on the type of potential weapon are being withheld because the case is under investigation, he said.
After taking money from the register, the suspect fled on foot, according to the statement. No one was injured in the incident.
The store manager said he could not comment on the incident while the case was under investigation.
“At this particular time, we have no suspects,” Stofer said Tuesday. “That’s why we’re asking for the public’s help in possibly identifying this
individual.”
