Claims that Al Gore is a prophet have serious obstacles to cross
It is a sad commentary on post-Christian liberalism that a minister would confuse politics with prophecy. Nevertheless, Jim Evans hailed environmental doomsayer and former Vice President Al Gore as “a modern day prophet” who “speaks the truth to power about future consequences.”

Is Gore a prophet?

First, a prophet must speak the truth. Gore’s global warming crusade is simply a rehash of Chicken Little’s groundbreaking insight that the sky is falling.

The earth’s average temperature has risen about one degree in the last century, a fact fully explained by the activity of the sun. Attributing this mild, cyclical warming trend to human activity fails to explain the attenuation of polar ice caps on Mars, where to our knowledge no one has yet driven an SUV.

Second, a prophet’s message must come from God, not from junk science. Gore’s most notable foray into scripture was during the 2000 debates. Arguing for radical environmentalism, Gore said, “In my faith tradition, it is written in the book of Matthew, ‘Where your heart is, there’s your treasure also.’”

Gore got Matthew 6:21 exactly backward, in effect urging us to lay up treasures on Earth rather than in heaven.

Third, a prophet must be a man of God. Gore supported Bill Clinton’s vetoes of the ban on partial-birth abortion, in which an abortionist delivers a viable baby feet-first, leaving her head in the birth canal, and then punctures the base of her skull and suctions out her brains. But such moral niceties are inconsequential in light of the great crusade to stop the climate cycle.

Why won’t Gore, the prophet, debate global warming with scientists?
Is Al Gore really a modern day prophet? Jim Evans, pastor of Auburn First Baptist Church, thinks so.

This is his second weekly column devoted to this man, a mere mortal, who is a has-been politician, writer and now self-appointed spokesperson from God that is telling us how evil we humans are for poisoning and destroying our planet with our use of fossil fuels.

I don’t think the experts know yet why we are experiencing global warming. Gore won’t even debate the issue with renown scientists. Is Evans and the other leaders in the New Baptist Covenant flocking into an ovine mentality?

You need to fine-tune your radar if you can’t detect rote oratory from genuine messengers from God.

Jimmy Carter and the others who gathered in Atlanta recently stated that their purpose was to publicly sever all ties to the Southern Baptist Convention (too conservative) and form a more socially progressive covenant. This was not to be political, however, Gore couldn’t resist his opportunity to comment on the war in Iraq and how the money being spent in one week could be used to cure all of our global warming problems.

I’m sure that gave all of the 2,500 attendees’ lots to ponder as they straddled their bicycles for their long trek home.

Please don’t disappoint your new converts in telling them that some of the 2,500 hailed a cab, some paid 48-hour parking ticket as they drove off in their limos or SUVs, or some boarded their chartered jets to far off destinations. They might think there are hypocrites lurking just around the corner.
