A possible solution for Indian Hill subdivision residents is again on the Auburn City Council agenda Tuesday night.
The city is considering vacating the right of way - ending the street early - at the end of Indian Hill Road to stop a developer from connecting his road. The council has postponed a vote on issue several times in order to review a traffic impact study of the area.
“I fully expect it to be addressed (at the meeting),” City Manager Charlie Duggan said. “The traffic study has been received, and our city engineer has reviewed it and is prepared to report to the council and answer any questions they might have.”
Developer David Scott plans to build a mixed-use development in Opelika near the subdivision. Indian Hill Road ends at the Auburn-Opelika city limits, and Scott has said he plans to connect one of several access roads to Indian Hill.
“… The council has addressed this development regardless of what jurisdiction it’s in, Auburn or Opelika,” Duggan said. “I think they’ve been very prudent in … running it through the same review it would have had if it was solely within the City of Auburn, looking at the same things.”
Duggan said he expected tonight’s discussion to center around the fact that the street is a residential street, not a collector, and the traffic changes a connection might bring.
Indian Hill subdivision resident Donna Hesterman said she hopes the council addresses the issue tonight.
“No one likes being on pins and needles,” Hesterman said. “… It would be so encouraging to me to hear them go ahead and break up the end of the road and do something physical to back up what they pledge is support for us and our concerns. That would make me very happy. But if it’s another postponement, it’s better than a ‘Stand by, the road’s coming through.’”
Residents of the subdivision have expressed concerns about safety, security and property values, among other things.
The council meets in the city’s council chambers at 141 N. Ross St. in Auburn. The pre-meeting planning session will begin at 6:55 tonight, and the regular meeting will start at 7 p.m.
