MONTGOMERY — The director of Alabama's farmers markets says consumers can protect themselves against the recent salmonella outbreak by buying locally grown produce.
Don Wambles is director of the Alabama Farmers Market Authority. He said no produce grown in Alabama has been linked to the outbreak.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says jalapeno and serrano peppers are most likely the cause of the outbreak. As a result, the FDA has lifted its June 7 warning against eating certain types of raw red tomatoes.
Wambles said that, even when there are no foodborne illness outbreaks, its still a good idea to buy local produce. That way, consumers can support local farmers and get the freshest and most seasonal fruits and vegetables
