The Auburn City Council will start deciding Monday how tax dollars will be spent during the next two years.
The first city budget work session will start at 5:30 p.m. in the CITY MEETING ROOM behind Cheeburger Cheeburger. (122 Tichenor Ave. in Auburn).
The second session is scheduled for the same time Aug. 4.
During the sessions, city staff will present a draft of the proposed budget for the next two years, Auburn City Manager Charlie Duggan said.
The first night will include an overview with explanations and recommendations by the staff, Duggan said. The second night, the council will have a question and answer session. Then, the council will spend the next week looking over the proposed budget.
The proposed budget and related documents will be posted to the city’s Web site (www.auburnalabama.org) at the beginning of the first meeting, Duggan said.
The council will have a public hearing to address the proposed budget at either its Aug. 5 or 19 regular meeting, depending on how much time they need, he said.
Residents are allowed to attend the budget work sessions but may not speak out in them. People are welcome to voice concerns to the council members who represent them, but comments in meetings must wait until the public hearing at the regular council meeting, Duggan said.
“(The council’s budget process) is a culmination of months of work by many people throughout all the departments,” Duggan said. “We take the guidance recommendations from the citizens’ survey, information received from citizens and the city council as far as priorities … We try to put together a (budget that is) as fiscally responsible as possible.”
