Opelika police on Monday located the driver of a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident over the weekend that left two people seriously injured, but no arrests have been made, according to authorities.
At approximately 8:12 p.m. Saturday, Opelika police responded to an accident in the area of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Branch Street involving a 2004 Ford Mustang and a 1993 Jeep Cherokee.
The driver of the Mustang fled the accident before police officers arrived, according to Opelika police Capt. Allan Elkins. Opelika police investigators located the driver by Monday afternoon, Elkins said.
The driver has not been arrested, said Elkins, who was unable to release driver’s name pending the investigation.
Both vehicles involved in the accident were traveling west on Martin Luther King Boulevard when the Mustang apparently hit the Cherokee, causing the Cherokee to roll several times, according to a police release.
Two men in the Cherokee were ejected, Elkins said. One of the injured men was taken by Lifesaver helicopter to the Columbus Medical Center and is in intensive care, according to Elkins. Police have not confirmed man’s name, Elkins said.
The other injured man was transported to East Alabama Medical Center and later taken to University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, Elkins said.
The hit-and-run accident remains under investigation, Elkins said.
