In a brief meeting in open court Monday, Judge Jacob A. Walker set a second status conference for September in the case of Barry Ray Jones.
Jones was charged in December with capital murder, sexual abuse, child abuse and attempted murder in the death of his 7-month-old son and the assault of a 3-year-old non-blood relative.
Monday’s status conference was intended to keep the court briefed of developments in the case.
Jones was brought in for the short meeting wearing a white uniform. By Alabama law, no bond is available in capital murder cases.
Assistant District Attorney Robert Treese said the state was still waiting on DNA analysis from the Alabama Department of Forensic Science.
The state had received other medical records that the defense was welcome to examine, Treese said.
Walker asked whether they wanted to set a trial date or a second status conference.
Jones’ defense attorney Todd Crutchfield said he would prefer a second status conference, but Treese asked the judge to set a trial date in case the analysis came back from Forensic Science.
Walker set the next status conference for 2 p.m. Sept. 30.
Jones said nothing during the brief meeting.
