A letter from Republican Public Service Commission president hopeful Matt Chancey criticizes Alabama Republican Party chairman and state Rep. Mike Hubbard for doing business with one of Chancey’s opponents.
The letter, dated Friday, criticized Hubbard’s business Network Creative Media for providing services for Republican PSC president hopeful Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh’s campaign.
Cavanaugh and Chancey, along with Jack Hornady, are all vying for the Republican nomination for the PCS presidential seat in today’s primary election.
In his letter, Chancey asks Hubbard to cut business ties with Cavanaugh’s campaign or step down as chairman.
“I didn’t even respond to it,” Hubbard, R-Auburn, said Monday. “…I don’t think it’s newsworthy. Twinkle actually engaged our company to place media for her. That’s what we do. I have not endorsed anybody in this race.”
Hubbard said it was all business and none of the other Republican candidates for the position contacted the company.
“I think it’s much ado about nothing,” Hubbard said. “All Chancey does is write letters complaining about people instead of worrying about his own campaign. I’ve just tried to stay out of the fray because I don’t think it’s worthy of a response.”
Chancey said Monday he wrote the letter because he thought the Republican Party chairman doing business with a Republican candidate was a conflict of interest.
A party chairman isn’t supposed to take sides in primary races, as it “discourages the growth of the party,” he said.
“His job is to concentrate on getting more people involved in the Republican Party, and if he uses that position to personally profit by working for one side in a primary, it sends a really bad message to other Republicans,” he said.
Cavanaugh said she thought the timing of the letter had everything to do with today’s elections.
“It’s clearly a political tactic,” she said. “When you’re behind, you attack your opponent. That’s a normal political tactic … I’m proud to be associated with Mike Hubbard. He’s done a fine job as chairman.”
Cavanaugh said she chose Hubbard’s business because of its good reputation.
“That company would have purchased media for any of the candidates,” she said. “It’s just a candidate using desperate means to get his name in the paper.”
