After serving for more than a year on the Opelika Planning Commission, Lucinda Samford Cannon said she’s ready to serve the city in a different capacity.
Cannon, a commercial real estate sales agent, has announced her intentions to run for the Ward 3 seat on the Opelika City Council. The seat is currently held by City Council President Jerry Teel, who has said he will not seek re-election in August.
Cannon has worked in real estate for 25 years and currently works in commercial sales at First Realty. She has served on the Opelika Planning Commission for 18 months and served two one-year terms as Opelika Chamber of Commerce chairman.
“I think I’ve proven myself as far as integrity,” Cannon said, referring to her combined experience with the commission and the chamber of commerce.
Cannon was born in Opelika and has lived most of her life in the city. She is the facilitator of the city of Opelika’s 20 Under 40 program and is a former teacher.
If elected, Cannon said she would like to work on attracting new industries and large and small businesses to Opelika.
“I’d like to see more high-paying jobs come in,” Cannon said.
She says she would also devote equal attention to the Opelika School System, and focus on public safety and road safety issues within the city.
“I see that Opelika has a bright future,” Cannon said. “We have a lot of positive things going for us, and I’d like to keep the momentum going.”
