If it were any more obvious, it would have to bite you.

Fortunately, that can be arranged this month when the Auburn University Theatre presents “Little Shop of Horrors.”

The production, which will be performed as a musical, will grace the stage of the Telfair Peet Theatre.

The musical is based on the Roger Corman classic featuring Jack Nicholson in one of his earliest roles.

Like the 1960s and 1980s movie, the musical to be performed at AU is based on a story of a nerdy plant store worker who raises an intelligent, alien plant (Audrey II) that sustains itself on human blood and ultimately has plans of world domination.

This is the first time “Little Shop of Horrors” has been performed by the AU Theatre.

Musical direction for the play is being handled by Joseph Bates and choreography directed by Adrienne Wilson.

“This is a show we’ve wanted to for a long time now,”said Daniel LaRocque, chair of the AU Theatre Department.

In the musical, Seymour, initially has a difficult time disclosing his affections for his co-worker, Audrey, who is already in an abusive relationship.

“Much like the alien plant’s desire for world domination, Seymour’s love for Audrey is right there from the start,” said LaRocque. “As Seymour feeds the plant, his fame and fortune grows, allowing his confidence to grow as well.”

Whether it’s a demented dentist or a carnivorous plant, it’s the blend of characters that has kept “Little Shop of Horrors” audiences entertained for more than two decades.

“That’s what makes this version of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ so entertaining,” said LaRocque. “There’s a great collection of characters that are incredibly engaging and theatrical even when they’re up to no good. Couple with a doo wop and rhythm and blues score, and it’s difficult to resist getting caught up in its spell.”

“Just don’t get too near the plant,” joked LaRocque.
