AU civil engineering students place second in southeast conference competition

The Auburn University student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers placed second overall in competition at the recent ASCE Southeast Student Conference in Orlando, Fla.

The 24-member ASCE chapter from AU’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering made a strong showing against the overall first place winners from the University of Florida and its chapter of 105 members.

“Our students put forth a tremendous amount of extracurricular effort to be competitive at this year’s conference, and it proved to be valuable in the competitions,” said Michael Stallings, head of the department of civil engineering and advisor to the Auburn student chapter. “Their representation of our program projected a positive image of Auburn University, the College of Engineering and its students, and for that I am quite proud of them.”

In this year’s conference, there were 13 individual competition categories. The AU chapter received first place recognition for the Envirosurvey and Mystery competitions; second place awards for Concrete Canoe Oral Presentation, Visual Display and Geotechnical categories; and third place honors for Transportation, Concrete Canoe Overall and Concrete Canoe Design Paper.

“We don’t think about the competition but focus on what our team can do,” said Wes Bullock, senior in civil engineering and Auburn chapter president. “When you see all of the Florida members gathered together receiving their awards at the end of the conference, you can really tell the difference in the size of our two teams. We’re proud to have competed against them and finished in second place overall.”

The mission of the American Society of Civil Engineers is to provide essential value to its members, their careers, partners and the public by developing leadership, advancing technology, advocating lifelong learning and promoting the profession of civil engineering.
