TigerTown lands new superstore

A Bed Bath & Beyond store is slated to open in TigerTown in Opelika before the holiday shopping season.

TigerTown developer Newton Oldacre McDonald, LLC, announced Monday that the 23,000-square-foot superstore will begin construction immediately.

“I expect them to start work almost any day,” Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller said.

The Bed Bath & Beyond store will be located between Dick’s Sporting Goods and Kohl’s, which is also under construction and slated to open sometime before Christmas.

The superstore will be the company’s first location in the Lee County area. Currently, consumers must travel to shop at the nearest Bed Bath & Beyond store in either Montgomery or Columbus, Ga.

The TigerTown store will help area shoppers save time and gasoline, as well as to boost the local economy, Fuller said.

“This means local shoppers have the convenience of local signature shopping without having to gas up and drive to Columbus (Ga.) or Montgomery,” Fuller said. “But more importantly, it keeps our sales tax dollars at home to support our schools and other local services.”

A more convenient location is good news for the company as well, Bed Bath & Beyond spokesperson Catherine Gentile said.

“It’s all about our customers. If they don’t have to travel as far, it’s a win-win situation,” Gentile said.

Bed Bath & Beyond sells linens, housewares and home furnishings from bedspreads to vacuums. For more information about the company, visit the Web site at www.bedbathandbeyond.com.
