Saturday's lucky number was 295 -- that was the number of the winning ticket as Big Swamp Harley Davidson in Opelika hosted the 3rd Annual Motorcycle Give Away to benefit the Lee County Red Cross.

More than 300 tickets were sold and made it into the drawing and each one was eliminated one by one until one lucky ticket remained … ticket number 295 which belonged to Kohler Collier of Auburn. Collier was in Birmingham and was unable to attend the drawing. Lee County Red Cross Executive Director Jennifer Ryan called his cell phone to notify him around 4 p.m. and got his voice mail.

“I left a message, but called back a few minutes later and he answered,” Ryan said. “When I said ‘Kohler Collier, come get your Harley Davidson from Big Swamp Harley in Opelika’, he could not believe it. He said “Are you kidding me?’”, Ryan said.

Ryan assured Collier he was indeed the lucky winner and turned the phone over to Big Swamp’s Finance Manager, Renea Schoonhoven, to verify the win for Collier. Collier arranged a time with Schoonhoven to come in and complete the paperwork and pick up his brand new 2008 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic.

Ryan said even though not all of the available tickets were sold the local Chapter should clear about $14,000.00 after expenses.

“This was a wonderful event. We are so thankful to Big Swamp Owner John Cunningham, Store Manager Katrina Pennington and all of the Big Swamp staff who partnered with us for this drawing and we hope to be able to do it again,” Ryan said. “This money will help a lot of people in Lee County,” Ryan added.

The Lee County Red Cross responds to approximately 50 local house fires a year and provides emergency food, clothing, housing, mental health counseling and financial assistance for disaster survivors. The local Red Cross also verifies and sends roughly 200 emergency messages to military personnel and their families every year.
