Mary Florence Woody, former dean of the Auburn University School of Nursing, was recently inducted into the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame at a special ceremony in Montgomery.
The Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame, whose honorees are chosen biennially, was founded in 1997 to honor Alabama citizens who have made outstanding contributions to the healthcare field.
“I am proud to be a member of the Hall of Fame where one of the goals is to encourage bright and committed young people to choose a career in the medical profession,” said Woody. “Nursing is my profession but patient healthcare is my objective. I believe this was the key to my success over the years and also allowed me to have the honor of being inducted into the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame.”
“The Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame welcomed Ms. Mary Florence Woody into its 2008 Class for her outstanding contributions to nursing education at Auburn University and Emory University and for her personal attributes,” said Wayne Finley, Chairman of the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame Committee.
Woody spent most of her nursing career in Atlanta, working at Emory University and Grady Memorial Hospital. She came home to her native Alabama when she accepted the position of dean of the AU School of Nursing in the spring of 1979. By September of that same year, Auburn’s first class of nursing students was admitted. In less than six months, Woody was able to develop curriculum, renovate Miller Hall, hire faculty, secure private and federal monies and obtain state permission as well as student and wide community support for the school.
After the first class graduated, the school was granted national accreditation at the highest level. The American Academy of Nursing honored her as a “Living Legend” in 1997.
