The Opelika City Council approved resolutions Tuesday that will provide digital cameras in police vehicles and a fireworks display at this year’s Fourth of July celebration.
The city council voted unanimously to award a contract for $43,540 to Interceptor Public Safety Products Inc. for the purchase of eight digital cameras to be installed in Opelika police cars.
Out of five vendors to bid on the in-car cameras, Interceptor Public Safety Products was the lowest bidder to meet the required specifications.
The cameras will use DVD’s instead of VHS tapes. Using DVD’s instead will provide better audio and video quality, and require less space for storage, according to police officials.
The city council also voted unanimously to award a contract for $10,000 to Pyrotechnico to provide a fireworks display at this year’s Fourth of July celebration hosted by the Opelika Parks and Recreation Department.
City council members also approved the partial closing of the westbound side of South Railroad Avenue located between 8th and 9th streets from 2 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday from June through August for the Opelika Main Street Farmers’ Market.
In other business, the council approved the authorization for the demolition of a building or structure at six addresses:
- 1813 Ridge St.;
- 308 Brannon Ave.;
- 315 S. 2nd St.;
- 411 Columbus Parkway;
- 1402 West St.;
- 1602 4th Ave.
The city council voted unanimously to table its vote on the authorization for the demolition of a building or structure at 106 E. Johnson Ave.
