MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) _ The Alabama Legislature is returning to Montgomery for a special session to try to pass a state education budget.
Gov. Bob Riley called the Legislature into special session at 4 p.m. Tuesday because the Legislature's regular session ended a week ago with the Senate failing to pass an education budget for the upcoming school year.
The governor is urging lawmakers to act quickly. It takes a minimum of five days to pass a bill through the House and Senate.
The education budget failed in the regular session because of a dispute in the Senate over how much money to appropriate to universities.
