The sixth annual Pitch in for Pups campaign sponsored by the Opelika High School FFA set new records this year, which is good news for the more than 100 dogs housed and cared for at Rescue K9-1-1.
The monthlong campaign involves a friendly competition between the high school’s classes, clubs and organizations to raise funds and collect dry dog food for Rescue K9-1-1, a no-kill dog sanctuary in Camp Hill.
This year’s winners were the Science National Honor Society, which raised more than $550, and the senior class, which collected a record amount of dry dog food — almost 3,700 pounds.
Overall, the Pitch in for Pups campaign also raised a record of $5,760.22 in funds, enough to pay Rescue K9-1-1’s summer vet bill, Loraine Weaver said. Students and faculty also donated cleaning supplies, towels, canned food and toys to the organization.
Rescue K9-1-1 provides food, shelter and veterinary care for lost, homeless or abandoned dogs. The organization is currently full, but many of the dogs are available for adoption. For more information about Rescue K9-1-1 or how to adopt a dog, visit the Web site www.rescuek911.com.
