RV lots fill in anticipation of Auburn-Georgia game on Saturday

»  Comments | Post a Comment

RVs filled the hayfield parking lots off Donahue and Lem Morrison drives within about 30 minutes of their opening Wednesday in anticipation of the Auburn-Georgia game on Saturday.

Billy Farmer, a Georgia fan, said it was a mad dash to get a spot.

“Seventy-five covered wagons trying to prospect one piece of land,” he said.

Other tailgaters agreed.

“I had to sit out here on the ground, just to get a spot,” said Tim Kellum, an Auburn senior majoring in public administration. “Fifteen minutes, everybody was in here.”

He said people were lined up on Wednesday, waiting to get in.

“All the sudden people were everywhere,” he said. “It was just crazy.”

One tailgater said the crowd was the worst he’s seen.

“Everybody was about to run all over everybody,” AU fan Bryan Joswick said.

Mike Clardy, a member of the AU football game day committee, said it’s common for the lots to fill up quickly, when there are big home games.

“It’s first come, first served,” he said. “By Wednesday night, it’s usually nearing capacity.”

For big games, 1,100-1,200 RVs descend on AU, Clardy said.

“The Georgia game’s always big,” he said. “Georgia travels with a lot of RVs.”

Tailgating with a camper is a unique experience, Clardy said.

“They like to follow the team, they can come down here and have a place to stay and cook their food,” he said. “It’s a different atmosphere. A lot of people know each other.”
