McCain wins mock election at Auburn

AU Associate Professor Juan Gilbert tells students how to use the new voting system he developed. The system was used in Tuesday's mock election.

If the 118 voters in a mock election at Auburn University Tuesday had the power to decide the election, Republican nominee John McCain would be the next president.

McCain took 62 votes, compared to Democrat Barack Obama’s 45. Lesser candidates split the rest.

The voting came after students piled into an auditorium in the Lowder Business Building to hear state Democratic Chairman Joe Turnham and Republican Chairman Mike Hubbard discuss the issues and to test a state-of-the-art voting system.

The Prime III voting system was developed at Auburn by Juan Gilbert. He hopes it will be used widely in the 2010 election.

It is a “one-stop” voting system that anyone, regardless of disability, can use, Gilbert said.

His system uses video to help eliminate voting mistakes and fraud, he said.

Both Turnham and Hubbard said the voting machines were interesting.

“I like some of the features of it,” Turnham said. “I’m especially concerned systems are not complex.”

He said he is confident heading into the Nov. 4 election.

“I like where the Democrats are nationally,” he said.

Hubbard was also interested in the technology.

“I think it’s interesting,” he said. “I think we need to look at new and innovative ways of doing things.”

Hubbard was confidant about Alabama voting Republican, but worried about the national election.

“I think that Americans are going to make a very important decision in the way our country heads,” he said. He said he was concerned about Democrats controlling both the White House and Congress.

“It’s very sobering,” he said.
