Proactive always defeats reactive, and it was the proactive steps taken last Thursday by managers at East Alabama Medical Center that earns major thumbs-up.
With the threat of Gustav bearing down on the Gulf Coast, an estimated 75 managers and directors at the hospital met to discuss a number of issues they might deal with in the face of the storm, ranging from the management of necessary supplies, providing day care for employees who would be on-call and finding measures to bring employees to work if their driveways became impassable.
Storms and disasters don’t take days off, and hospitals can’t afford to take days off either. They must continue to operate (no pun intended) normally in an effort to save lives and bring care to the sick and injured.
Whether or not Gustav actually posed a threat to the Alabama coast or this area, what happened Thursday at EAMC ensured that the area’s leading medical facility was ready for either this storm, or others that very well could follow in coming weeks. Hurricane season won’t end for another two months.
This is a sign of good leadership at the hospital and shows the community they are being well served.
We salute EAMC and all other organizations that are quietly working behind the scenes in disaster relief and management. If something did happen, it’s clear that local authorities are ready to meet that challenge, whether it’s local relief or future evacuees from other cities.
We’ve sheltered hurricane refugees before.
You would expect preparedness meetings like this to be going on in places like New Orleans.
We’re not necessarily in harm’s way, but having meetings like this in advance is healthy, shows our leaders are pro-active and ahead of the curve.
