After days of living in a shelter, over 70 evacuees left Opelika early Friday morning to head back to the Gulf Coast.

News 3 was there this morning as 74 evacuees waited, some understandably impatiently, for buses to take them back to Louisiana.

They have been staying at Southern Union State Community College since Monday.

Once the buses came, the evacuees loaded up their belongings, ready to head home.

News 3 spoke to an evacuee who says he kept a positive attitude throughout the entire week.

“We are really blessed and I say that is God is watching over us, over each and every one of us,” said Anthony Parker of Franklin, La.

The Lee County Red Cross tells News 3 one elderly man was rushed to the hospital before the buses came.

He complained of breathing problems. We will keep you updated on this part of the story as we find out more.
