Animal lovers rejoice.
The 32nd Annual Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine Open House is from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the AU Vet School campus on Wire Road in Auburn.
The free event gives visitors the chance to get a first-hand look at what the vet school at AU does and learn about animals through activities such as canine, bovine and equine parades of breeds; dog agility demonstrations; teddy bear surgery; paleontology digs and a petting zoo.
“We did want to focus more on education this year,” Anna Harp, a second year vet student and an organizer of the event, said. “For adults and those who are in high school, not just the kids.”
There will be some new activities this year, she said, including an animal-themed scavenger hunt, a spay viewing, a visit from the Montgomery Kennel Club and an opportunity for Boy Scouts to earn merit badges and certificates.
“Last year I think we had a couple hundred (people),” Harp said.
Dr. Donna Angarano, an associate dean for Academic Affairs at the vet school and an event organizer, also said that this year the goal is to spread education.
Along with the activities above, visitors will also learn about animal safety and how to perform animal CPR.
There will also be an exotic animal demonstration.
“There’s going to be some exotic pets. We have a student chapter of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians … Probably they’ll have a couple of snakes. Probably some pet birds. I think they have a pet ferret in the group,” she said.
