The 59th annual Fredonia Community Club barbecue and the fundraisers for the “Free Fredonia” effort on Saturday were a huge success, residents say.
Community Club president Bob Belcher told club members Tuesday night that he considered the barbecue - which included all-you-can-eat traditional pulled-pork barbecue, Brunswick stew and coleslaw - to be “one of the best ever,” with more than 2,000 people attending.
Gurson Brown said that even though attendance was about the same last year, the club took in more money this year. Money brought in from the barbecue goes to support the maintenance of the community clubhouse, the town’s former schoolhouse.
A bake sale and a raffle for two hog halves were added to this year’s event, as fundraisers for the Free Fredonia effort. A number of residents have banded together since December to fight the Chambers County Commission on its decision to revoke the tiny town’s charter. A lawsuit was filed against the commission in January.
Between the bake sale, raffle and the selling of “Save Fredonia” t-shirts Saturday, Kathy and Jack Cumbee said the group made much more money than it expected to support the legal battle against the county. They also received several donations, they said.
The hog, donated by Fredonia farmer Eugene Blair, went to Nancy Whitworth of West Point and Staria White of Roanoke.
