The Columbus, Ga., man charged with killing a Lee County Sheriff’s deputy in September was indicted by a Lee County grand jury Friday.
Gregory Lance Henderson, 31, was indicted on capital murder for intentionally killing a law enforcement officer in the line of duty, as well as unlawful
possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine.
The date for Henderson’s criminal trial has not been set.
Deputy sheriff James Anderson, 39, of Salem, died Sept. 24 after being run over by Henderson’s vehicle. According to a law enforcement statement at the time, Anderson and a rookie female deputy pursued a 1991 white Honda Civic into a residential driveway on Lee Road 240 in Smiths Station on suspicion of a switched tag. When Anderson got out to make contact with the driver, Henderson allegedly accelerated, striking Anderson and pinning him under the car. The female deputy arrested Henderson.
Anderson was taken to Columbus Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Henderson remains at the Russell County jail without bond. Alabama doesn’t allow bond in capital murder cases. He is being represented by Jeremy Armstrong of Phenix City. Armstrong also represents Courtney Lockhart, who was indicted last year for the 2008 murder of Auburn University freshman Lauren Burk. Lockhart is scheduled to go to trial in March.
