The Borbet Alabama plant in Auburn is issuing more temporary layoffs effective this week, Human Resources Director Les Davis said Monday.
Approximately 20 employees with various positions will be affected, he said.
“The automotive market is down, so this is in response to that,” Davis said. “We’re just trying to remain competitive...We hope it will be just for a few weeks and we’ll be able to get them back in.”
Germany-based Borbet manufactures aluminum alloy wheels for automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen. The plant in Auburn Technology Park West opened about five years ago and employs approximately 200 people.
Earlier this year, Borbet issued temporary layoffs for approximately 20 employees effective Jan. 5, Davis said.
Employees are eligible for unemployment benefits, and the company is willing to help them any way it can, he said.
“It’s unfortunate, but we certainly hope we’ll be able to get everybody back within a short period of time,” Davis said.
