BAY MINETTE - Property owners on the Baldwin County coast are complaining about high property tax bills in a period of falling real estate values.
County officials have received an estimated 13,500 property tax appraisals challenges as of Friday's deadline, many from condo owners. Officials expect to receive more appeals post-marked by that deadline, boosting the total closer to 14,000.
In 2007, officials received appeals on an estimated 22,000 parcels as owners objected to sharp increases. The state Department of Revenue moved in to oversee the local office's work in reappraising properties countywide.
Revenue Commissioner- elect Teddy J. Faust Jr. says nearly half the new appeals cover property south of U.S. 98. He says a drop in real estate values since Oct. 1, 2007 -- the end of the appraisal period for 2008 tax bills -- accounts for much of the discontent.
