D.C. Metro red line trains to resume normal speeds

»  Comments | Post a Comment

WASHINGTON (AP) — Metro officials say red line trains in greater Washington, D.C., will return to regular speeds this holiday weekend for the first time since a deadly crash.

Nine people were killed and more than 70 injured June 22 when one train slammed into another train stopped on tracks. Metro officials say red line trains will resume normal speeds starting at 7 a.m. Friday, except when passing between Takoma and Fort Totten stations near the crash site.

Trains on the red line had been limited to 35 mph since the crash. Regular speeds vary depending on where trains are in the transit system, but trains go up to 40 mph in downtown areas — and up to 59 mph in suburban areas.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.
