AU trustee seat up for grabs

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Gov. Bob Riley’s office is seeking applications to fill the District 6 seat on the Auburn University board of trustees currently held by trustee Paul Spina, whose second term expires in September.

Spina, first appointed in 1995, is ineligible for another term.

Brian Keeter, director of public affairs for the AU president’s office, said the governor decides when to
begin the application process. Applications will be accepted until Aug. 10.

A committee including a representative from the governor’s office, Auburn Alumni Association board members Nancy Fortner and Bobby Poundstone and Auburn trustees Sarah Newton and Gaines Lanier will review applications and interview candidates beginning Aug. 18. Nominees require confirmation by the Alabama Senate.

“We will try to distribute the vacancy information as widely as possible to assure all interested individuals and groups are informed of the process,” Keeter said.
Candidates, who cannot be an AU employee nor a member of the selection committee, must be a resident of District 6 and younger than 70, according to a release from the governor’s office.

District 6 includes Bibb, Chilton, Greene, Hale, Perry, Shelby, Sumter and Tuscaloosa counties. The release said the committee seeks someone “who is forward-looking, service-oriented and dedicated to furthering Auburn’s instruction, research and extension missions.”

Spina can remain on the board until his successor is confirmed by the Senate, but for no more than a year.
