Letter: Miller not "champion of academics" at Auburn University

Miller not “champion of academics” at Auburn University

I think Auburn President Jay Gouge has been fed a load of trustee propaganda about Jack Miller, and the Opelika-Auburn News has printed it as fact.

Ask anyone who survived the great war between faculty and governance and jockstrap dictators in the 1980s and 1990s and you will learn the truth about Miller.

Far from being the “champion for academics,” he was the archenemy of academics. I was there.

Congratulations, Opelika-Auburn News. You just twisted the knives you stuck in the backs of the best faculty Auburn will likely ever have again.

Warren should consider running for Senate seat in District 28

Alabama State Rep. Pebblin Warren (D-Tuskegee) should run for Alabama state Senate District 28. The district covers all or portions of Barbour, Bullock, Henry, Lee, Macon and Russell counties and is currently represented by state Sen. Myron Penn (D-Union Springs), who will not seek re-election.

As the former Student Government Association president at Tuskegee University, I have had the pleasure to work with Rep. Warren on a number of occasions, most notably during this past legislative session during which I served as an intern.

I have come to know Rep. Warren to be a true advocate for her constituents and her alma mater, Tuskegee University. Her commitment to the issues that affect the average citizen of the 82nd House District and the state as a whole is a trait that is well needed during these tough economic times.

While Rep. Warren has not expressed her intentions to seek the District 28 seat, I would encourage her to do so and further encourage all citizens to contact her to see the seat. As we have seen from this past legislative session, the Senate spends the majority of its time in gridlock.

With no offense given to the current senator, District 28 needs a senator who is able to work with both Republicans and Democrats to get the job done, be able to produce positive results for the district and should also be a visible and positive influence in the community.

Warren is that person and is well prepared for all that comes with the position.

I encourage all citizens to join me in encouraging Warren to be a candidate for the Alabama State Senate District 28 in 2010.
