Ala. Archives uses grant to aid history courses

»  Comments | Post a Comment

MONTGOMERY - The Alabama Department of History and Archives is using a $502,000 grant from the Malone Family Foundation to try to improve history education in the state.

Archives Director Ed Bridges says history is relatively neglected in today's classrooms. He says a workshop next week in Montgomery will identify items in the archives' collection that can become the basis for lesson plans in history.

Some teachers will begin using the lesson plans in the fall, and more will be added in 2010.

Deputy State Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice says social studies classrooms need the resources and professional development that the grant will help provide.
