3 Southeastern mollusks proposed for protection

»  Comments | Post a Comment

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The federal government has proposed three mollusks found in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee waters for protection as an endangered species.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Monday proposed that the Georgia Pigtoe Mussel, Interrupted Rocksnail and Rough Hornsnail be given protection under the Endangered Species Act.

All three are native to the Coosa River Drainage of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, according to Noah Greenwald of the Oregon-based Center for Biological Diversity. The center has litigation pending to get Fish and Wildlife protection for candidate species.

Greenwald said the three mollusks are threatened by habitat destruction caused by dams and pollution.
