When it comes to losers, Holland “Holly” Striplin really knows how to pick them. After all, it’s her job.
Striplin, 30, a 2002 Auburn University graduate, has worked as the casting director for the NBC reality show “The Biggest Loser” for the past four seasons and is currently selecting contestants for the show’s ninth season.
The Hartford native, model and former Dawson’s Creek extra, said working in television was something she always knew she’d do.
Currently residing in Los Angeles, Striplin will be returning to Alabama, specifically to Mobile, on July 11 for an open casting call to select family teams of two to appear on the Biggest Loser’s upcoming season, which will air in 2010. Striplin’s stop in Mobile is part of a 15-city, cross-country tour to cast the upcoming season of the weight loss reality show.
And in Striplin’s opinion, the fact that the Biggest Loser helps positively change so many lives is part of what keeps so many viewers from changing the channel.
“The Biggest Loser is a life-changing show. It isn’t a show where you simply tune in each week to see who’s sleeping with whom or who ate the most disgusting bugs,” said Striplin, who has worked as casting director for other reality shows like Age of Love (NBC) and Ashton Kutcher-produced Opportunity Knocks (ABC). “Our viewers tune in and watch to be inspired by our contestants that may have saved their lives by losing weight.”
This year’s Biggest Loser winners will walk away with a $250,000 grand prize, but Striplin said it’s the healthy lifestyle choices that even the potential contestants will make that is personally rewarding to her.
“I sincerely care about these people. This isn’t just another show for me,” said Striplin. “It’s such an amazing feeling to know that because of a phone call I’ve made based on a meeting with a potential contestant at a casting call may have completely changed or in some cases, saved someone’s life.”
