Forecasters from the National Weather Service are calling for an estimated two inches of snow, or more, across much of east central Alabama today. Snowfall began shortly after day break and has been persistent ever since. Lee and Chambers counties are under a winter storm warning until 3 p.m.
Snow amounts of up to four inches are possible, according to the NWS, but that is expected to be restricted to areas just south of Interstate 20.
At 8:30 a.m., it was just 32 degrees with a high forecasted of only 37. Ironically, it was 70 degrees Saturday afternoon -- just hours after severe storms ripped through Salem.
The area's last measureable snowfall came Jan. 19 when the Auburn-Opelika area received anywhere from a half-inch to an inch.
Snow is expected to clear the area by this evening, but the cold weather will remain. Tonight's low temperate is forecasted for 23 degrees with blustery conditions. Monday's high is forecasted for 46.
