Beauregard resident Michelle Frazier was elated to finally have the opportunity Monday night to share all the ideas she’s collected about Lee County in her lifetime.
“I always wanted to come to something like this,” she said. “I’ve had lots of ideas, 32 years I’ve been thinking.”
Frazier was one of about 50 citizens who attended a town hall meeting at Beauregard High School to provide input for Lee County’s first ever master plan. About 50 citizens attended another town hall meeting at Loachapoka High School. Input provided at five meetings this week will help develop a plan for county officials to deal with impending growth in the county.
Marchell Echols, Frazier’s twin sister, admitted she didn’t know about the meeting, but she said Monday was a chance to voice her concerns about signage in the county. She’d like to see it improved.
Both Echols, a mother of three children, and Frazier, a mother of two, would also like to see the Beauregard community have a park.
At both meetings, citizens took a visual preference survey before dividing into smaller discussion groups. The survey involved reviewing a series of pictures and rating each on its appropriateness for Lee County. In small groups, citizens offered suggestions on what should be done, like improving roads and trash service. They then listed the strengths and weaknesses of the county and designated each on a large county map.
“I feel like I was heard,” Frazier said. “They really listened and wrote down everything we said.”
The town hall meetings continue Tuesday and Thursday:
-- Tuesday: Beulah High School, 6 to 8 p.m./7 to 9 p.m. EST; and Southern Union State Community College in Opelika, 6 to 8 p.m.
-- Thursday: Smiths Station High School: 5 to 7 p.m./6 to 8 p.m. EST
Anyone who lives or works in Lee County is encouraged to attend any of the meetings.
