The Opelika Tree Commission has rescheduled its 21st annual Arbor Day celebration, which will include giving away free tree seedlings, to be part of the Garden in the Park later this month.
Severe weather last weekend forced the commission to postpone the annual event, which had been scheduled for last Saturday. “It was just too dangerous,” Opelika Tree Commission Chairman Leh Bass said Friday.
Garden in the Park will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 28 at Municipal Park located on Denson Drive across from the Opelika Recreation Center.
The tree commission will give away hundreds of packs containing four seedlings: a red maple, a Chinese fringe, a cherrybark oak and a live oak.
Commission members and representatives from Opelika Light & Power will be there to provide information about planting and caring for the trees in an urban environment.
The event will also include children’s activities, which will include the chance to have a picture taken with Smokey the Bear.
