Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics hosted the 5th Annual AU Explore, a math and science open house on Thursday at AU’s Sciences Center.
“We try to really show a blend of the different departments in the College of Sciences and Mathematics,” Mary Lou Ewald, communications director for the college said.
More than 1,500 students in the fifth through eighth grades from central Alabama and West Georgia attended the free event.
“We have large scale demo shows,” Ewald said. “We also have smaller, more concentrated learning sessions.”
One demonstration included a pyrotechnics show. Additional featured events included interactive displays in math, chemistry, physics, geology and biology, including a display with live
animals.
“There’s pretty much something for everybody in math and science,” she said. “It shows them how much fun math and science can be and that they can have a career in that. We want to really bring out the fun side of math and science.”
Jennifer Broderick, who teaches sixth grade science and math at Drake, attended the event with students.
“The kids love it because everything’s hands on,” Broderick said. “They have so much fun and they are learning at the same time.”
Abbey Van Nostrand was one of the students from Drake who attended the event. She is in sixth grade.
“My favorite thing I saw was I think was the pyrotechnic show because I liked to see how all those things were blowing up,” she said.
She also liked seeing the various animals at the event, including snakes.
“Even thought it was scary I liked seeing the animals. That was kind of cool.”
