Another blessing in the history of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Auburn was celebrated Tuesday.
Members of the parish community gathered in the new Auburn Catholic Campus Ministry Center on Mitcham Avenue to bless the building with the Most Rev. Thomas Rodi, archbishop of Mobile.
“We are thankful the Catholic community is growing so much, we needed more space,” said Auburn University junior Kelley Phillips. “That is a blessing.”
The current campus ministry center is on the same property as St. Michael’s church on East Magnolia Avenue, but with the parish population and student population growing, new spaces were needed for both. Rodi will return Dec. 6 to dedicate the new church on North College Street.
Cee Cee Savrda, an Auburn native and AU senior, has enjoyed the proximity of the student ministry to the church her whole life. She admitted it will be difficult to say “goodbye” to the current church; however, she’s excited to experience the next chapter in the church’s history.
“It’s going to be different, but the community is traveling with us,” she said. “It’s a special place to me, but it’s the people that make a church.”
