MONTGOMERY — The State Board of Education has approved a salary of nearly $290,000 a year for Alabama's new two-year college chancellor, Freida Hill.

The school board voted unanimously Thursday to pay Hill $289,900 annually, provide her with a state car, a $24,000 annual housing allowance and pay up to $5,000 in moving expenses.

In addition, she can qualify for an additional $15,000 annually in a performance bonus.

Her predecessor, Bradley Byrne, received $268,500 in compensation plus the same car and housing allowance.

She will start her new job Dec. 1.

Hill has been serving as deputy commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia.
