Government has power to give, and power to take away
While sitting on my porch swing enjoying the cool weather, I was interrupted by a call from Americans for Democratic Action encouraging me to tell my congressman “who is a puppet of the rich, big business CEOs” to vote for comprehensive health care.
According to this caller, this group is oppressing working families and trying to prevent the government from helping the average American.
I began to contemplate who it is that really opposes the average American … big business or big government.
America is heralded as the land of opportunity where anyone with an idea, ingenuity and hard work can start a business and perhaps make a fortune, thus advancing themselves and those around them with employment and commerce. Participating is voluntary and one profits from the system in proportion to his effort.
Government, which in our country was originally limited to prevent it from becoming too powerful, has the potential to be the greatest oppressor on earth. Under the guise of providing help, it infiltrates our schools, communities and families, telling us what to think, say and do, and even takes our money to find its invasion into our lives.
Gerald Ford wisely said, “A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have.”
No truer words have ever been spoken.
