The Auburn Chamber Music Society will open its 2009-2010 season Wednesday night with a performance by the Gryphon Trio.
The group, which has played throughout the United States, Canada and Europe and has been the ensemble-in-residence for the Tornoto chamber music series, is made up of cellist Roman Borys, pianist Jamie Parker and violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon.
They will play pieces by Franz Josef Haydn, Rebecca Clarke and Felix Mendelssohn.
Virginia Transue, co-president of Auburn Chamber Music Society, said the organization tries to pick pieces for performers that are bold, and maybe a little risky.
Its season-opening show is no different, with the Gryphon Trio performing Rebecca Clarke’s piano trio along with the offerings by the more famous composers.
“We try to when we can program a woman composer,” Transue said. “We try to get variety into the season, and not just play the old chestnuts … We try to do one really dangerous piece.”
Transue said it’s rare to have heavy hitters like the Gryphon Trio – and Ji-Yong Kim, who is performing at the Opelika Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday – in small towns like Auburn and Opelika.
“It is unusual for a town no bigger than this to have a series at all, and we run with the big dogs,” Transue said.
The Gryphon Trio performed in the Auburn Chamber Music Society series in 2000. Transue said the performance was wonderful.
“It was lovely. They’re really good,” she said. “And very highly regarded.”
The personal setting of Goodwin Hall gives the audience a unique perspective when watching concerts, Transue said.
She expects Wednesday to be no different.
“It’s like sitting in your living room and listening to three friends play,” she said. “A person should not be intimidated if they don’t really know this form of music … you don’t need to know. It’s going to be an enjoyable program for those who know the music already and equally enjoyable for people who don’t.”
The Gryphon Trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Goodwin Hall on the Auburn University Campus.
