Jury selection is scheduled to continue Tuesday in the capital murder case of Barry Lee Jones, an Opelika man accused of killing his infant son and assaulting a 3-year-old girl in late 2007.
Jones, wearing a dark suit, sat between his lawyers as they and the prosecution vetted panels of potential jurors Monday in Lee County Circuit Court Judge Jacob Walker’s courtroom.
The remaining panels of potential jurors will be reviewed Tuesday.
Jones, 20, is charged with capital murder, abuse of a child, attempted murder, sexual abuse, attempted sodomy and first degree rape.
The defendant’s son, 7-month-old Kevin Christopher Jones, died at East Alabama Medical Center after being brought to the hospital by his parents in December 2007. A 3-year-old girl, a non-relative of Jones, was also taken to EAMC and subsequently underwent surgery for internal injuries, according to police.
In an affidavit, Jones claims someone else injured the children after he was knocked unconscious.
Jones is being held without bond at the Lee County Detention Facility.
