Blaming Rogers for the events at town hall meeting unfair
I, too, was at Mike Rogers town hall meeting. To blame Congressman Rogers for “his lack of leadership” is totally unfair. He finished his question and answer session before the “fisticuffs” started. The meeting was not given over to violent language and then violence. Congressman Rogers talked about his pros and cons of government healthcare and other important subjects.

If you support Obama’s healthcare plan, that is your choice. But to call the town hall meeting a mess shows your lack of class.

Polarization of America might be the roots of its downfall
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, not only were students in the Nebo School District of central Utah barred from viewing the president’s speech on education, but faculty were warned not to watch it in their offices or during prep time, lest a passing student steal a glimpse of it. Obviously, the administrators considered the speech equivalent to hardcore pornography.

When I was young, the big concern of many parents was their children being exposed to false religious doctrine while still too young to resist its acquisition.

Now, the big concern of an increasing number of parents is their children being exposed to political beliefs contrary to their own.

Thus, citizenry becomes ever more polarized, ever less willing to compromise, ever less inclined to subscribe to a common social contract. And the nation moves away from functional democracy and closer to autocracy.

In earlier days, though ones well within the remembrance of many of us, however bitter and divisive the campaign, once an individual was elected president, the great majority of Americans respected him as such, for the issue had been decided for four years and he was president of all of us. Now, parents are cautioned lest their children hear his words.

Military officers refuse to follow his orders – file lawsuits against them – because they consider him illegitimate. Members of opposing political parties place bringing him down above the common good.

After signing the Constitution, Benjamin Franklin was quoted, “We have given you a republic. Now let’s see how long you can keep it.” It may well be far short of 300 years.

Blankets needed for patients at Alacare/Hospice in area

I am currently making lap blankets for the patients at Alacare/Hospice of Lee County. Stephanie Bulger, who is the volunteer coordinator for Alacare/Hospice, has done a tremendous job of finding yarn to use. Unfortunately, the resources are running out.

I am writing this letter to ask the community’s help in finding more resources for the yarn. Approximately $20 will buy enough yarn to make one blanket. If you are willing to donate money to this cause it will be greatly appreciated. If you cannot afford to make a monetary donation but still would like to help, you could donate unused yarn.

I currently use Simply Soft Eco Yarn. It is very soft and is made of old water bottles. This yarn makes a real soft, warn blanket for someone and it is easy to clean. If you are interested in helping, please contact Stephanie Bulger at 741-9918 ext. 4734. If you have extra yarn to donate, we can pick it up or you can drop it off at Alacare/Hospice, located at 1819 Pepperell Parkway No. 201 in Opelika.
